Obscure Thunderbird mail checking problem

I had a client contact me today. They had some users whose automatic mail checking was no longer working properly in Thunderbird. I found one reference to the following procedure, and it works.

1) go to Tools… Account Settings… and click on Server Settings.
2) UNCHECK “Check for new messages at startup”, “Check for new messages every xx minutes”, and “Automatically download new messages”
3) Hit OK
4) Quit Thundbird and run it again 3 times (yes 3 times)
5) go to Tools… Account Settings… and click on Server Settings.
6) CHECK “Check for new messages at startup”, “Check for new messages every xx minutes” (I set it to 1 minute for testing), and “Automatically download new messages”
7) Quit and run Thunderbird again.
Now it will work properly.

That client had changed email providers, so it is possible some internal preferences got corrupted in the process. I’m sure there’s a more elegant solution to the problem, but that fix is very quick and easy, and they don’t have too many users.
